PrintCollege lecturer makes pipe-cleaning Curiosity rover lookalike
Update 12/11/2012 - 08:27:04 AM (GMT+7)A Ho Chi Minh City college lecturer has just created a car-shaped robot able to clean the inside of ships’ pipelines by remote control.
Dr. Nguyen Tan Tien, Dean of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, successfully made the machine which looks like a smaller version of the famous NASA Curiosity rover and can run through pipes, 24 centimeters in minimum height and at least 30 centimeters in width.
Electronically operated, the robot is capable of penetrating pipelines aboard seagoing vessels to wipe the dust and dirt there with a rotating broom in the front.
A camera on it helps recognize the amount of muck on the inner side of the pipes, which now have to be dismantled manually by workers before periodic cleaning.
The lecturer built the device for a company at a cost of VND500 million (US$24,000).
