PrintCity to use Filipino English teachers at schools
Update 02/11/2012 - 08:02:54 AM (GMT+7)The Ho Chi Minh City education board will start sending 100 Filipino English teachers to designated K-12 schools next month.
The teacher distribution is part of a pilot program to help the students at those schools improve their command of English, according to the municipal Department of Education and Training.
The teachers will teach at elementary, middle, and high schools chosen by education offices at the district level, the department said.
They will teach English to students, engage in discussions on expertise with local English teachers, and take part in extra-curricular activities during the contracted time, it said.
The department added that it has worked with a partner to recruit these teachers, who already have a first degree and are all equipped with TESOL skills.
Each student will chip in VND120,000 (US$5.8) a month to cover the $2,000 monthly salary for the teachers, according to the department.
It explained that the Filipinos were chosen because of their standard accent thanks to the fact that English is one of the two official languages of the Philippines, local newswire Petro Times reported.
English is used in government documents and daily conversations in the Philippines, while most high schools and colleges there use the language as the medium of instruction, the news service cited the education body as elaborating.
The Philippines has recently become a major destination for Asian students who want to learn English, the department said.
