Graduate unemployment rate rises

Update 26/12/2015 - 08:27:10 AM (GMT+7)

Even though the general unemployment rate saw a slight decrease, graduate unemployment has continued to increase.

Statistics from the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs issued on December 24 showed that 225,500 graduates remained unemployed in the third quarter, an increase of 26,100 compared to 199,400 unemployed graduates in the second quarter. The number of unemployed graduate was 177,400 in the first quarter.

Compared to previous quarter, Vietnam's unemployment rate in the third quarter decreased from 2.42 percent to 2.35 percent.

"Many universities held graduation ceremonies in the third quarter," said Nguyen Thi Lan Huong, head of the Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs.

She went on to say that there was more demand for trained workers and mid-level technical specialists, but universities were still recruiting large numbers of students, much higher than the market demand.

Dao Trong Thi, Chairman of the NA Committee for Culture, Education, Youth and Children repeated that graduates are still failing to meet the standards employers were looking. Ironically, people were moving to large cities for work, while rural areas actually lacked sufficient applicants.

As a result, the unemployment rate of young people in the cities increased from 11.84 percent in second quarter to 12.12 percent in third quarter.
