Many universities and colleges in northern Vietnam are worried about a possible shortage of students for the upcoming years as the number of applicants seems to be on a falling trend.

Le Thi Thu Trang, deputy director of the Hanoi Education University, said they have received 2,000 out of total 2,800 applications and only a few students had withdrawn their applications in favour of another university.
 
Do Thi Kim Hao, deputy director of the Academy of Banking, said the school has received 1,300 out of a total targeted 3,600 applications.
 
The same situation has been recorded at many other universities.
 
“The withdrawal of applications may be busier in the next week when many universities and colleges issue their standard enrolment marks,” said Nguyen Phong Dien, head of Hanoi University of Technology’s Training Department.
 
Many other universities and colleges are worried about student shortages, especially for unattractive courses.
 
Pham Huy Hoa, principle of the Hanoi University of Construction, said as of late August 6, they had received only 1,042 applicants for 2,130 places for group A, and 48 for 670 places for group A1. It also received 337 applications for planning, down on the anticipated 500.
 
Some majors at the University of Water Resources received very few applicants, with only three applicants for 75 places for irrigation and hydropower, one for 75 places for sea work, four for 40 expected places for construction mechanisation and six applications for the 75 places for waterways ports.
 
“Entrants are allowed to register for four different options and can withdraw from applications they no longer wish to follow. However, several parents have complained about the stress while waiting for the enrolment results for 20 days. Some claimed that it’s harder to withdraw than to attend the university entrance exam,” one enrolment official in Hanoi said.
