The People’s Committee of the southern province of Kien Giang in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training organized a ceremony on Wednesday to announce the Prime Minister’s decision to establish Kien Giang University.

Located in Chau Thanh District, the higher education institution will be built as a branch of Nha Trang University – which is situated in the central province of Khanh Hoa – under the management of the ministry. It will operate in accordance with the country’s regulations on higher education.
Kien Giang University is expected to train 10,000-15,000 students by 2020.

The school will have 50 permanent instructors who have master’s and doctorate degrees, and experience in teaching at colleges and universities in the province.

It will offer 12 majors, focusing on tourism-marine economics, food technology-seafood manufacturing, environmental resources, and information technology.

“We will bring out our best ability, intellect, and passion to develop Kien Giang University, making the school a high-quality training center and one of the country’s reputable higher education institutions,” Associate Professor-Doctor Thai Thanh Luom, rector of the school, said.

Speaking at the ceremony, Le Hong Anh, a Politburo member, reminded the management board and instructors of the university to put efforts in changing teaching methodology and enhancing practical scientific research to produce a high-quality workforce in order to meet the demand of Kien Giang and neighboring provinces.

Vietnam now has more than 400 public and private universities and colleges.
