Have you ever seen the military get involved in a college admission exam? If the answer is no, your first experience should be here in Vietnam, where three armored vehicles were deployed Wednesday to transport candidates and their relatives to exam centers in a northern province to finalize their registration.

Heavy rain yesterday caused floods in many parts of Thai Nguyen Province, thus blocking the way to the centers, where applicants heading to college this year were required to carry out last-minute formalities for their tests on Thursday and Friday.

Colonel Do Dai Phong, Chief of Staff of the Thai Nguyen Command, told Tuoi Tre that almost 100 soldiers were also mobilized to help bring candidates to the centers on time, as many streets were submerged by up to 1 meter of water.

The deployment had been planned in advance in order to help college aspirants through any unexpected traffic problems, Col. Phong said.

Over 500 candidates and their relatives were successfully transported to the expected destinations within three hours on Wednesday morning, he said.

Every year local applicants must pass standardized tests prepared by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training to gain admission to college.

They are required to take the tests on a set of three subjects chosen from math, physics, chemistry, literature, history, geography, biology, and foreign languages to be admitted to the school of their choice.

The 2013 exams are slated for July 4 and 5 or July 9 and 10, depending on each candidate’s major.
