1.2 million more people to escape illiteracy by 2020

Update 17/05/2013 - 10:33:39 AM (GMT+7)

The government has just approved a plan to lift 1.2 million people between the ages of 15 and 60 out of illiteracy between now and 2020.

The literacy rate is expected to reach 94 percent in 14 designated poor provinces and 98 percent across the country by that year, according to the plan.

Among the disadvantaged provinces are An Giang, Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Gia Lai, Ha Giang, Kon Tum, and Yen Bai.

Around 300,000 more members of the local ethnic groups will escape illiteracy, taking their literacy level to 90 percent by then, the plan says.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan ordered that tailored classes be offered to the deaf, ethnic minorities, and visually impaired for the project to be successfully implemented.

The Ministry of Education and Training has been tasked with designing specific programs for these groups.

It has also been asked to customize the programs so that they are in line with current official school curricula.

The government’s National Target Program on Education and Training will provide funds for this plan.
