Students attend US international science fair

Twelve Vietnamese students departed for the US May 10 to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2013.

Among five teams competing at the fair, four come from Hanoi and one from HCM City.

The ideas include research on the treatment of lab wastewater by using limestone and sawdust by a group of three grade-10 students from the Hanoi-based Chu Van An High School; research on Isoflavone Aglycone production from soybeans by using microorganism technology by Nguyen Thao Anh, a grade-11 student from Chu Van An High School; and research on virus purification in water by using egg membranes by a group of three students from Hanoi-Amsterdam High School.
 

Other projects are a research on driving insects away by attar or resin of Baeckea frutescens L by two grade-11 students from Nguyen Hue High School for Gifted Students.
 

A project on automatic vegetable growing and fish breeding at home comes from a group of three students at the HCM City-based Le Hong Phong High School.
 

All the projects won prizes at national level in which both projects from Chu Van An High School won the first prizes.
 

Last year, three Vietnamese students from the Hanoi – Amsterdam High School won first prize at the ISEF 2012 in the field of materials and bioengineering.

Their method of processing salt water into fresh water by using solar energy and vacuum technology was praised for being easy to operate, cheap, and environmentally friendly.
