ASEAN-New Zealand scholarships granted to 30 young people

Thirty Vietnamese have received the New Zealand ASEAN Scholarship Awards to study in New Zealand.

The New Zealand ASEAN Scholar Awards (NZAS) recognise New Zealand’s close cultural, economic, and geographic ties with Southeast Asia. They seek to empower individuals with the knowledge, skills and qualifications to contribute to the economic, social, and political development of their region. The scholarships are offered for postgraduate level study only.

The scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the New Zealand government’s international aid and development programme.

New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam Wendy Matthews held a party at her house on January 17 to celebrate the news with 30 young people who will continue their researches and studies in New Zealand next month. They will be given full scholarships for their thesis, the cost of research as well as the cost of living.

John Laxon, Education New Zealand's Regional Director of India, SE Asia and the Middle East, said that the number of Vietnamese students going to New Zealand for higher education for the first time increased by 67% last year. The number of pupils going to schools in New Zealand increased by 75%.

Co-operation between two countries' education facilities also tightened in 2017. One of the most notable events is the memorandum of understanding signing ceremony on cybersecurity, computer science and environmental security between the University of Waikato and the People’s Security Academy of Vietnam.

Co-operation agreements exist for joint programmes or credits transition for Bachelor of Business Administration and Information Technology between Hong Bang International University and Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and between the Victoria Wellington University and the Ho Chi Minh City University of Science.

2017 also marked 10 years since HCM City University of Science signed with the Auckland University of Technology New Zealand to teach IT bachelor courses.
