Vietnamese student numbers second-highest in South Korea

Update 01/04/2016 - 08:04:23 AM (GMT+7)

Vietnam has the second-highest number of students among the foreign students in South Korea, the host country’s Ministry of Justice has reported.

There were 8,293 Vietnamese students out of the total 105,193 foreign students in South Korea as of the end of February.

China had the highest number of students in South Korea, with 62,318, accounting for 59.2 per cent of all foreign students in the country.

Following Vietnam was Mongolia with 5,262 students; Japan, 2,739; Uzbekistan, 1,581; and Indonesia, 1,512.

South Korea’s Ministry of Justice also reported the number of foreign students in the country staying on a study-abroad visa was 76,949, accounting for 73.2 per cent of the total number of foreign students, while the rest were in the country on a Korean language study visa.

The number of foreign students in the country began increasing in 2015, with 96,357 students reported.

It is thought that universities have implemented policies that are attractive to foreign students, and the trend of Korean culture and television films have lured the Asian youth to experience it firsthand.
