Print46th int’l chemistry Olympiad closes, Vietnam bags 2 gold medals
Update 30/07/2014 - 08:44:17 AM (GMT+7)The Vietnamese team won two gold medals and two silvers at the 2014 International Chemistry Olympiad which concluded in Hanoi on Monday.
The gold medals went to Pham Mai Phuong and Pham Ngan Giang from Hanoi-Amsterdam Specialized High School while the two silvers were granted to Do Viet Hung from Tran Phu Specialized High School in the northern city of Hai Phong and Doan Quoc Hoai Nam from Quoc Hoc-Hue High School for the Gifted.
Vietnamese students delivered a much better performance at this Olympiad in comparison with the previous editions.
A total of 28 gold medals, 63 silvers, 92 bronzes, and 10 consolation prizes were awarded at the 2014 event.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the competition, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said the 2014 International Chemistry Olympiad was a chance to discover talents as well as to honor and encourage a passion for chemistry.
The premier added that it was an honor for Vietnam to host the competition which gathered talented students from many countries and territories around the world.
The annual Olympiad, which was in its 46th year, attracted more than 550 teachers and students from 77 countries and territories all over the globe.
The International Chemistry Olympiad is a competition for high school students under 20 with the aim of promoting international contacts in chemistry.
It has been organized every year since 1968 (except 1971) in one of the participating countries by their respective education ministries or an appropriate institution of the organizing country.
